I just had to share this incredible young man's story of love and courage and indomitable spirit. Box of tissues needed...
The most recent one was a little slice of serendipitous wisdom. To me, there is nothing more generous then when somebody shares knowledge they have gained over time, hindsight. It is a golden opportunity to learn early what someone else wishes they had only known.

On Easter Sunday a friend happened to share the video below, which I (thankfully!) clicked on, and was instantly enthralled. It wasn't until the video was over that I realized the reader was Katrina Kenison. I had read two of her books a few years back - both of which have earned a permanent spot on my bookshelf. The excerpt she reads is from her book The Gift of an Ordinary Day. The video below takes a few minutes to watch, but worth it for a lifetime!
Distilled. Succinct. Powerful. These three words best describe the super-streamlined new blog 3 Things for Mom. I discovered this just-launched site a few days ago and it has since become my favorite spot.

Created by a mom for moms, 3 Things shares a daily "truth" (a life lesson, observation or insight), a "tip" (a practical "how-to") and a "find" (a product you tell all your friends about). Since January 2013, over 30 inspiring and insightful mom bloggers have already shared their 3 Things (like KJ Dell'Antonia of The New York Times Motherlode and Rivka Caroline).

The daily posts are archived and a shopping guide lists all featured products. I was blown away by the simplicity and poignancy of 3 Things, as well as her personal blog Sipping Lemonade, and contacted Lauren to see if she wouldn't mind sharing a bit more wisdom...

Q: WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO CREATE A SECOND BLOG IN ADDITION TO SIPPING LEMONADE?
A: The idea for 3 Things for Mom came from the simple fact that there are so many wonderful mom writers out there - and so little time to read them all. So I wanted to create a way for readers to enjoy a variety of great mama wisdom, in a way that fits their busy schedules.

Q: WERE YOU SURPRISED YOU WOULD BE ABLE TO FIND SUCH WONDERFUL CONTRIBUTORS EACH WEEK?
A: Yes and no. I am not surprised that I have found such wonderful contributors because there are so many wise and talented women. However, I was a bit a surprised at how receptive my contributors have been. Surprised, humbled - and very happy, of course.

Q: YOUR SITE IS SUCH A WONDERFUL WAY TO START THE DAY. DO YOU HAVE ANY FAVORITE BLOGS YOU LIKE TO READ?
A: One of my favorite blogs would be Kelle Hampton's, Enjoying the Small Things. Kelle's daughter, Nella, was born with Down syndrome about a year before my daughter, Kate, was born with Down syndrome and we had very similar experiences. When a friend shared Kelle's blog with me the night Kate was born, it was a great comfort and I've followed her blog ever since. Another would be The Pioneer Woman - she's hilarious AND she introduced me to the best chocolate cake recipe ever!

Q: WHAT "TRUTH" DO YOU RELY ON MOST?
A: "Love begins at home, and it is not how much we do, but how much love we put in the action that we do." - Mother Teresa

Thank you Lauren for 3 Things, and many more!
For those you of who haven't heard, Nora Ephron hated her purse. That is, until she found the one she loved. My own purse relationship has been quite even-keeled, but my planner - forget it.

I have dated numerous types: paper, digital, small, large, daily, weekly, and any other combination you can think of. But last week, it was love at first sight when my new best friend arrived. But this glorious new relationship was not without forethought. After enough failure I knew what I wanted. Warning: this is about to get graphic...

It had to be weekly because I can see the week in my head. The daily gets me all jumbled and doesn't allow for planning (a day or two) ahead.

It had to be big enough for me to take care of business but small enough to go along for the ride.

It had to be spiral to lay flat which makes writing and flipping a cinch.

It had to be flexible in content with additional daily spaces you can customize. My go to's: children's schedule, writing, personal goals and meal planning.

It had to inspire. I am a sucker for inspirational quotes so I love them peppered throughout. This week's was a great Irish blessing.

It had to surprise me. Little did I know I would LOVE having dedicated pages for vacation planning, entertaining, books, wines, fashion, music, nutrition and health.

I know I sound high-maintenance, but it was well worth the struggle...and the wait. The myAgenda Spiral Refill by momAgenda fits this bill to a T. And it lives in this Refillable Folio Cover (they had me at shimmering-spring-green and monogram). A match made in heaven!
PS: This the myAgenda, they also sell the momAgenda. Enjoy!
There's nothing better than when shopping local reveals a hidden treasure, and such was the case on a recent jaunt through my favorite twine. The store is always crammed with loads of goodies but a basket of cuppows really made my day.

I have long-loved mason jars, and always keep a bunch on hand - but thanks to the ingenious cuppow, any canning jar transforms into a travel mug. So long sippy cups - I am loving the BPA fee and 100% recyclable cuppow on a half-pint mason jar for my littlest. Next up - my latte!
PS: Cuppow comes in regular or wide mouth sizes so double check your jar.Chasing Motherhoodhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10780899751888523062noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2677230293567618427.post-26433908468408528712013-02-25T15:06:00.000-05:002013-02-25T19:06:57.602-05:00"JUST BREATHE"

Every now and then one of my children says something that stops me in my tracks. A year ago it was my little guy and his "Patience Power". Yesterday it was my daughter's turn. It went something like this:

"Are you okay?"
"Sure. Why?" I asked.
"Every now and then you take a big breath".

Yikes... full disclosure: it also happened earlier in the day on a Staples run with two in tow as the littlest squirmed on the checkout counter. I gave myself a break on that one, but when I was busted that same afternoon in my own home, I knew it was time for a change.

And I was actually relieved when I realized how long it had been since I carved out the time to take a deep breathe. Those sighs are a sign. I forgot how much I used to enjoy using the precious first few moments of a morning as a clean slate. It's a quick chance to read some inspirational words, or a minute or two of meditation - or better yet both!

It dawned on me that these two lessons from my children are related. I guess it's not just the kids that need reminders :)Chasing Motherhoodhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10780899751888523062noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2677230293567618427.post-26853150590615042032013-02-14T23:08:00.001-05:002013-02-14T23:08:25.597-05:00"SOME PEOPLE"

There is much talk of legacy when a loved one passes, but a recent experience taught me there can also be a parting gift.

The following poem by Rachel Field, a family member's favorite, has stayed with me from the moment I heard it at a recent remembrance.

Though this poem may be small in size, I believe it to be colossal in effect. On this Valentine's Day and all days, let us try to be a vibrant source to those we love:

SOME PEOPLE
Isn't it strange some people make
You feel so tired inside,
Your thoughts begin to shrivel up
Like leaves all brown and dried!

But when you're with some other ones,
It's stranger still to find
Your thoughts as thick as fireflies
All shiny in your mind!

Thank you Laura, and much love and peace to the Scanlon family...
I love a-ha moments, both mine and others. And often, we can learn just as much from other people's life-changing decisions as from our own. And thanks to Lisa Leake of 100 Days of Real Food I am giddy with information overload.

I have a Facebook friend to thank for this recent discovery - last week a "like" popped up on my feed that made me stop and take notice. Minutes later I was immersed in the 100 Days world, navigating around wide-eyed and super-inspired. Yes, it's a long process to make the kind of changes their family decided to, and no, I will not be following it to a T. I have a vivid memory of watching Saturday morning cartoons as a six year old. On this particular morning, I sat amongst a few children, all of whom laughed wildly as the escapades unfolded on screen. I sat there, silent. Not a peep.

Now don't get me wrong...I find LOTS of things funny, very funny: I am an avid SNL fan, could watch The Hangover on repeat, and semi-worship Judd Apatow. I am also a huge believer in the power of laughter. I am still, however, acutely aware after all these years, that it is rare that something makes me actually laugh out loud.

Cue Whitney Collins. Her recently published adult-eyes-only collection "The Hamster Won't Die" is my kryptonite. For Whitney (creator and editor of two humor websites: Errant Parent and The Yellow Ham) humor has always been her forte. We reconnected post-college thanks to Mark Zuckerberg, and her status updates alone are reason enough to log on. And it seems the words of the late, great Nora Ephron, "Everything is copy", applies directly to Whitney's life.

But with Whitney's writing, not only is just about everything copy, it's all funny. Her humor has appeared on The Huffington Post, McSweeney's Internet Tendency and others, and The Hamster Won't Die is a collection of her essays, poems and musings. Here is a brief excerpt from her essay "It's Like...." regarding what she wishes she was told pre-parenthood:

"For example, I would have appreciated knowing that administering oral medication to an infant was about as easy as inserting a rectal suppository into a hummingbird. I would have also like to have known that bathing a baby was like trying to wrestle a greased eggplant from Lake Superior. And in lieu of a sterling rattle, I would have much preferred the gift of blatant honesty. Why didn't someone tell me that diapering a baby boy was the equivalent of folding an origami crane while someone urinated in my mouth?"

And of course, when given the chance, there were a few things I just had to ask...

Q: HOW OLD WERE YOU WHEN YOU DISCOVERED THE POWER OF WRITING?
A: In first grade, everyday, my teacher Mrs. Meekins, gave us blank paper at the top for illustrations, lined at the bottom for text, and encouraged us to write stories. I loved this. It was all I ever wanted to do. I still have that year's worth of illustrated stories. One of them was my first attempt at humor. It was a commercial for a decongestant nose spray, interspersed with some news stories about hostages. It was pretty twisted. But funny. Thanks to that, I knew I wanted to make people laugh early on. (Who knows if I am succeeding, but I'm at least cracking myself up. I have pretty low standards when it comes to comedians.)

Q: HAS HUMOR ALWAYS BEEN YOUR VANTAGE POINT? IF SO, WOULD YOU EVER EXPLORE ANOTHER?
A: There was a time in college, when I was majoring in Fiction, where I tried to write really deep, overly wordy, ambiguous short stories. The humor, however dark, kept peeking through. I really tried to suppress it. I thought it was a sign of weakness. Even through a brief stint in an MFA program, that I eventually dropped out of, I thought humor was cheap or unintelligent. Finally, I just came out of the comedic closet and said: I don't really want to write about depressed a-holes. I want to make some poop jokes.

Q: HAS PARENTHOOD CHANGED YOUR WRITING?
A: Parenthood has changed everything. It's what has brought me back to full-on humor. Before my first son was born, I was dabbling in humor writing, but had not fully embraced it as my calling, so to speak. Then my son got colic, and for six months, my life consisted of listening to my child inconsolably scream. In a scenario like that, you either start finding humor or you start finding heroin.

Q: CAN YOU SHARE A BIT OF YOUR WRITING "ROUTINE" AND HOW YOU CARVE OUT THE TIME?
A: My routine. Well, as most people know, I love Facebook, and more recently, Twitter (@theunpoet). These two outlets give me a forum for quick one-liners and observations. So, it's kind of like writing throughout the day. Sometimes a tweet or status update will later lead to an essay or poem or humor piece. But my true routine happens on Monday, Wednesday, Friday. That's when my almost-2-year old goes to a Kid's Day Out Program from 9-2. I only write then. I don't run errands or do laundry or clean or catch up on correspondence. I try to force myself to write from 9:30-1:30, three times a week.

Q:WHAT WAS THE PROCESS LIKE TO SELF PUBLISH?
A: Self publishing is awesome. It used to be expensive, now it's $75. They only print your book when someone orders it, instead of you getting stuck with 1,000 copies in your garage. I chose Lulu.com for self publishing. My book can be bought through Barnes and Noble or Amazon. Having supportive friends and family has been crucial. But honestly, I really haven't published to make some big debut. I was just turning 40, had a bunch of comedic crap compiled, and truly thought the world was ending on Dec. 21. That motivated me. The thought of the entire world in flames and everyone around me screaming helped me throw a little prose together.

Q: WHO ARE YOUR ICONS?
A: Oh, those dear people I worship. Let's see: Tina Fey, David Sedaris, Amy Sedaris, Lena Dunham, Dave Barry, Erma Bombeck, Flannery O'Connor, Kate McKinnon, Kristen Wiig, Louis CK, David Spade. These are funny, brave people for whom looking foolish is not an issue. The joke, even the darkest and dorkiest joke, always comes first for them. I love people who don't worry about what others think. They just worry about delivery. Beyond the super-famous people I admire, I really love and am inspired by my funny kids and husband and Facebook friends, particularly Mary Laura Philpott, JD DuPuy, Cary Howard, Dan Burt, Monique Alice, Sissy Gardner, Cindy Gold, Amy Rodriguez and Meredith Bland. Those folks are really hilarious. Their banter is a daily delight.

The bedtime "tuck-in" is a ritual I covet. There is nothing better than the bath, book, bed routine for a younger child. There's often a science-like precision: teddy bears or blankets in place, door open a crack, hall light on. And the lullabies - the same songs my mom sang to me. The thought of our children "nestled all snug in their beds" is dreamy.

But as the parenting cliche so truly states, the days may be long but the years are short. Soon the baby is a toddler and the toddler is tween. Now while I read the baby Goodnight Moon, the oldest is reading her own book in bed for Lit Circle. So where does that leave tuck-in? And why does bedtime seem to keep getting later and later for the older ones?

After a family-dinner last night (yay!) we asked how come they were fast asleep for the sitter the night before? What was the secret? "She sings to us and stays there longer". Wow. We asked, they answered. Now I am a huge proponent of self-soothing and resilience, but I realized the tide may have swung a bit too far. A goodnight kiss and a thirty second song followed by the dreaded "did you study your spelling words" from the door does not exactly make for a smooth transition to "la-la land". And last night's success was proof of the power of an extra minute or two.

Yes, as kids grow up nurturing must share space with independence and grit - but it doesn't have to be three's a crowd - there's room for all!

A catch-up phone call with a dear friend this past weekend led to a "grass is always greener" discussion.

Aesop told it best in his City Mouse and Country Mouse fable, and although we know the notion is unfounded, it can still rear it's head from time to time.

I love this list of 12 Things Happy People Do Differently which was recently posted on Habitually Chic. As I embark on the New Year steadfast in my resolution to cook with abandon, I mentioned there are three things it will take to right the ship in our house - determination, preparation,
and inspiration.

And while the first two are integral to make sure that loads of home cooking becomes a reality - without inspiration, it's drudgery.

To get those creative juices flowing, look no further than The Pig and The Fig, created by Michelle DeHaven. Her blog is sleek, health-centric, and peppered with a dash of daring. The mouth-watering photographs showcase her latest dish - and her laid-back style and prose make it look doable, and better yet fun! Lucky locals, her newest feature is customized cooking classes in your home.

I got a chance to ask Michelle a few questions and here's some insider scoop from this fab food-guru:

Q: HOW AND WHEN DID COOKING BECOME A PASSION?
MICHELLE: I started cooking at about age 7 at the hip of my grandmother (we lived in the same house) and it grew from there. My Dad was a kind of pioneer "foodie" who was somewhat obsessed with food from other cultures. His (pre-hipster) idea of a good time was to travel to markets and food trucks and taste everything. I grew up in a house where we had a smoker in the backyard, a huge vegetable garden and ducks draining in the sink.

Q: DO YOU BELIEVE IN PLANNING AND PREP? IF SO, WHAT'S YOUR STRATEGY FOR KEEPING UP WITH SO MANY HOME COOKED MEALS?
MICHELLE: I'm all about planning but not without room to change your mind. I always have a well-stocked pantry which means a great meal is never really more than 30 minutes away. I keep up with the pantry items and shop for perishable ingredients like fruits, vegetables, proteins and bread during the week. This way it is WAY easier to quickly hop into a store, pick up a few things and go. It also helps that my kitchen is set up for business. You know that "mise en place" thing chefs always go on about on cooking shows? It works. Having everything logically within reach makes the whole process from prep to clean up way more manageable. Set up your "work station": have a variety of bowl sizes nearby, your spices organized within reach of your prep area, some kosher salt in a small bowl along with a pepper mill and olive oil on your counter near your stove top. This way, you contain the mess to one area and you are not running around the kitchen when you could be busy cooking.

Q: WHAT IS YOUR BEST "GO TO" MEAL IF YOU NEED TO WING IT?
MICHELLE: I always have a huge chunk of parmesan, some bacon or pancetta, eggs, olive oil and pasta on hand. Always. (Linguine this way or that).

Q: WHAT ARE YOUR TOP 5 KITCHEN TOOLS?
MICHELLE: A sharp 8" knife, a cast iron pan, a large good quality cutting board, a great blender and a food processor - with these you can do just about anything in the kitchen. Having said that, the last two are optional but will make your life a whole lot easier and delicious. Most importantly, make sure you ONLY cook the freshest and best quality products, never anything too processed.

Q: WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MEAL TO COOK?
MICHELLE: That's a hard one but if I HAVE to answer, I would say roast chicken. I love the way the house smells like all is right in the world. It's easy for me to throw a couple of chickens in the oven and putter around the house taking care of other things while knowing the most delicious dinner (and leftovers) await.

Q: ANY TIPS FOR COOKING FOR A FAMILY?
MICHELLE: Keep your pantry well stocked would be my number one tip. Make recipes that can be easily adapted to satisfy a variety of palates (with the quick addition of some spice or something pickled, etc.) AND always roast two chickens at a time so that you have great leftovers for soup, sandwiches, tacos, etc.
At some point the lights turn on and it's time to clean up the party...ornaments, nutcrackers, lights and the like are (almost) tucked away until next year.

And as the dust settles hopefully some wonderful new memories shine bright, as well as some standouts in the gift department.

My favorite gift to give this year was a throwback to one of my beloved childhood books - sadly long out of print. But thanks to TIME For Kids, The Big Book of Why was a fine replacement. And TFK publishes a whole slew of other kids books I am eyeing for next time... There's always something new on the horizon, and looming largest is New Year's Eve. I took some time this year to prioritize my resolutions. Highest on my list: food.

A huge category with an equally huge impact. They say, "you are what you eat" - and wellness aside, the intangible gifts that come from gathering at a family table are stellar. So what will it take?

Like most families, we've got obstacles to hurdle (one with life-threatening food allergies, the other with major aversions, and the babe just learning his way around a meal). It will take determination, preparation and inspiration to right this ship, but lucky enough there is loads of the last. Can't wait to share my faves each Friday throughout the year!Chasing Motherhoodhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10780899751888523062noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2677230293567618427.post-41792191312871514382012-12-21T09:41:00.000-05:002013-01-26T15:23:18.265-05:00"MINI MODERNISTS"

'Tis a few nights before Christmas and I am eager to soak in the spirit with the kiddos this weekend. For eons I have wanted to tackle a gingerbread house and am determined this is the year.

I surfed for instructions and was completely enthralled and inspired by Anna Harrington's "Modern Twist" on the tradition. Her take (recently covered by Martha Stewart) is super cool: the focus is on the imagination of the creator versus cookie-cutter style. And it's not the first time Anna's work has stopped me in my tracks.

Anna is a mom-of-two and the founder/creative director of Brooklyn-based Yummy Time, where she leads cooking workshops for children at Pomme. And as a small world gets smaller, I was able to connect with Anna and find out some "yummy" scoop firsthand. See my questions below...Thank you Anna!

Q: How did the modern twist come to be?
ANNA: It just seemed the only way to do them. I never entertained the idea of doing traditional houses with kids. They are so specific in how something should look. In all my classes I like to provide the kids with wonderful and beautiful materials (that provide an aesthetic starting point) but the rest is really up to them.

Q: The beautiful colors make the unique designs really pop. What are your favorite candies to use?
ANNA: I go to Economy Candy on Rivington and buy everything in bulk. Almost nothing is a brand name. I am very careful to buy things that are only plain geometric shapes, without logos. This year I am in love with the colors of the small round chocolates.

Q:While your whole process is uber-inspiring, any tips for the novice or time-short on how to simplify or cut corners if need be?
ANNA: You can always just make frosting which is fast and painless and use graham crackers as building blocks. BUT the house smells amazing from this gingerbread and everyone loves to eat it, so I think it's worth the effort once a year. (Full recipe and instructions here).

Q:What is your favorite thing about cooking with children at Yummy Time?
ANNA: How much more they will taste and eat when they've been involved with making a meal. I can't tell you how many parents are shocked by what their kids eat in my classes. Also, cooking is just like a big art project. It is messy and they can use their hands in a really gratifying way. My last post was a declaration to enjoy the moments of this season. Of the many perks, a favorite is the sense of calm. Just a dash of preparation and purpose also allows some time for reflection - often lost in the mad dash.

I am a huge fan of clean slates, and in less than a month comes the ultimate. Instead of my usual hasty promise right before the clock strikes, I have decided to take advantage of this amazing opportunity we are given each year.

With some time to actually think about it, a few different resolutions for the New Year pop up. How about a twist? Brainstorm a list and set it aside. Pick a favorite for January, and any time during the year - first of the month or on a whim - revisit the list and go for another. I just may if I'm game!Chasing Motherhoodhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10780899751888523062noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2677230293567618427.post-4467773239755535972012-11-27T08:51:00.000-05:002012-11-27T12:05:58.900-05:00"SPREAD A SMILE OF JOY"

Summers seem shorter, months and days zoom by.

Thankfully the holidays are the perfect opportunity to be steadfast in our effort to enjoy the moment. It is an ironic goal, with all the chatter of Black Friday, Cyber Monday and the like.

Now is a chance to honor family traditions, to savor the moment, and to think of others. Little by little, make a point of using and enjoying holiday favorites. Some of mine: window lights, great music, and a Christmas pillow my mom made - a true treasure. And thanks to my super sister-in-law I found this countdown in my inbox today - the perfect gift!
My thoughts and prayers go out to those so burdened by loss and destruction. Hopefully, with community efforts like Restore Our Shore in New Jersey, and the wonderful people at St. Francis de Sales in Rockaway, the process of healing and rebuilding can begin and sustain.

From my own pre-storm prep I learned some lessons - good and bad. Prep that helped: filled up the gas tank, confirmed insurance was current in advance of storm, made a cash withdrawal so when credit card machines were down I was able to buy some warm, prepared food and to purchase needed medicine, and made sure I had enough baby food and supplies for a little while. I also had a lantern that takes AA batteries - stores were cleared of D's right away.

Lessons learned: have a car charger for cell phone, keep copies of prescriptions and pre-fill anything running low (I used up a big chunk of my cash with an emergency run to the powerless pharmacy), stock up on D batteries for flashlights in advance, and keep a car adapter in console for nebulizers, etc. For the future, here is a much more legit checklist courtesy of ABC News that I will most certainly follow.

Again, thought and prayers to all those suffering - stay strong and let us all continue our efforts to help.
What sounds at first like a groovy mantra, is really precious sentiment. Our greatest joys are never exactly the same as another's, nor are our deepest heartaches, but we all share in common the certainty we will feel both. Sometimes, it is the challenge of others we lament: family, friend, neighbor, stranger. Sometimes it is our own (very) rough ride we must survive. Wherever life finds us, when we can we must try to take the time to really enjoy the little things. Late mornings and lost lunches can always take a backseat to squeezes, squeals and smiles. Though they come few and far between, the power of an "ah-ha moment" is life changing. We are still reaping the benefits of my first one.

My most recent "ah-ha" was a bit more subtle, but none-the-less mind altering: all the "stuff" that we try to do on a daily basis to try to oversee how our children can keep their belongings organized, eat well, complete homework, mind manners etc. etc. etc., means nothing unless our children are an active part of the process.

Case in point: forever and always I prepared dinner on my own while the three kiddos were occupied. Post ah-ha? Our two of "kitchen-age" trade off weekly between Chef and Sparkler (my desperate attempt at making clean up sound more fun). The chef and I discuss dinner in advance, including what to serve, sides, drinks etc. From start to finish they assist and have already learned so much it's mind boggling. They ask to make menus, name the restaurant, pick plates, cups and more. Now, when we are finished eating, the sparkler and I spend ten minutes rinsing and loading - with music, chatter, and even a few laughs - who knew!

If everything runs smoothly on a daily basis because someone "else" makes it so, then a child has no training or education in mandatory life skills. Continuously taking the "quick fix" of straightening up or smoothing out on behalf of a child denies them the instruction they deserve. Though it's hard to imagine, they all grow up. Ah-ha!

It's no shocker that life is busy. A lot of people would say it is "crazy busy", according to the New York Times. The result? The notion of a family dinner sounds more like fantasy than fact. Thanks to Cozi, help is on the way!

In order to shed some light on this seemingly universal struggle, Cozi and Partnership for a Healthier America are promoting America Makes Dinner to encourage families all across the country to sit down together, tonight, for dinner.

According to Cozi CEO Robbie Cape, "Research links frequent family meals to a lower risk of smoking, drinking and drug use, and a Columbia University study even found that kids who eat dinner most often with their parents are 40% more likely to get mainly As and Bs in school."

I am already a big fan of Cozi, the multi-award winning family organizer, and I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to find out first hand why Cozi decided to take part in this campaign. The responses to my questions are below:

Q: Why is America Makes Dinner an important initiative for Cozi?

A: Cozi created America Makes Dinner to change the way American families think about dinner and provide them with the tools and encouragement they need to prioritize healthy, sit-down dinners. Most everyone agrees that eating dinner together is a good thing - good for our health, our families and our wallets. But things get in the way - like homework, soccer practice and not knowing quick and healthy recipes. Both Cozi and Partnership for a Healthier America, our partner on the America Makes Dinner campaign, are committed to helping build healthier futures for our children, and we hope that families across the nation will join us to promote the importance of sitting down as a family to have dinner and talk about their day.

Q: What were the findings as to how often families are able to eat dinner together? What was the biggest obstacle to having family dinner?

A: Cozi's American Dinner Survey found that 52% of families with kids at home miss dinner together at least two or three days each week; a total of 104-156 missed dinners annually. Fifty percent of respondents said demanding work schedules or kids' extracurricular activities are the biggest obstacles keeping them from having dinner as a family.

Q: How can Cozi help improve the problem?

A: Cozi helps families solve this problem by simplifying the everyday logistics of busy family life and keeping each family member on an organized schedule and aware of the rest of the family's commitments. The Meal Planner and Shopping List features are especially helpful for getting dinner on the table. You can store all your recipes in one easy-to-access place online, add ingredients from your recipes right to your list and drag and drop your recipes to create a dinner plan for the week that the whole family can see. You can also create shopping lists, and even send your list by email or text to anyone in the family.

Q: What was the most surprising information to come out of the American Dinner Survey?

A: We were most surprised to find out that only 4% of parents reported that cooking the meal is their favorite part of family dinners. Only 16% said eating a home-cooked meal was their favorite part, and the majority, 61%, said that spending time with the family is their favorite part. Also, that more than half (59%) of families watch television during some or all of their dinners together.

So tonight's the night to start fresh - pick one of these three great family dinner ideas from celebrity chefs and tons more from all around foodies. Bon Appetit!

It's always fun to find a win-win, and such is the case with dear jane. A quick pop-in to the store last week led me to my new fall faves: best brown leather boots ever and an even cooler bag I have since carried daily. And all this thanks to a summer closet purge when I consigned a few items to jane. The store was opened in 2009 by my sister-in-law Jane and niece Isabelle to "reuse what others no longer need, to rethink what we already have, to revitalize these things, and in doing so, our lives." Sounds good to me. And I'm not alone in singing jane's praises - check out all the raves, and cool events. One of the most generous gestures I ever received was after the birth of our first child. A friend inquired when would we be coming home so she could "start the meals" - and over the next few weeks, a different person dropped off dinner.

I have incredibly fond memories (yes, maybe a bit selective) of those first few weeks at home hunkered down with a newborn, in large part due to the relief of knowing that dinner was done.

Since then, I have been able to return the favor many times. Recently, a dear friend whose generosity has made her the ringleader on many of these "make a meal" occasions introduced me to a very cool website Take Them a Meal. In good times and bad, the gift of a meal can work wonders, if even for a moment. This super cool site streamlines the coordination process for all - a true gift.
